The Most Common Equipment Mismatch We Fix
A 10-ton RTU is the size where we see the most expensive mistakes. A contractor quotes a 5-ton split for a space that needs about 10 tons of packaged capacity. The split runs flat out all summer, the back of the floor never cools, and the PM ends up paying twice when the right unit finally goes in.
A 10-ton packaged unit delivers about 120,000 BTU per hour. It suits larger retail floors, open-plan offices, gyms and multi-zone spaces. We confirm the size with a Manual J load calculation on every job.
Packaged vs Split at 10 Tons
| One 10-ton packaged RTU | Two 5-ton splits | |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | One cabinet on one curb | Two condensers + two indoor units |
| Indoor space | None | Two mechanical spaces |
| Refrigerant lines | None through the building | Two line sets |
| Service | All on the roof | Roof and indoors |
For most flat commercial roofs, packaged is simpler and cheaper to maintain. See packaged rooftop units for a full comparison.
What a 10-Ton Install Involves
Crane and curb
10-ton units go up by crane lift with spreader bars. We plan crane reach, rigging and any City of Toronto ROW permits on the site assessment. When the new unit goes onto an existing opening, our shop fabricates a curb adapter.
Staging and economizer
Most 10-ton units use multi-stage scroll compressors so they can run at part capacity on mild days, which improves comfort and humidity control. An economizer adds free cooling in spring and fall and is required by code on many sizes.
How Much Does a 10-Ton RTU Cost?
$18K-$34K installed in 5-7 days, including crane, curb check, connections and commissioning on standard roofs. High-efficiency units often qualify for Save on Energy rebates of $200-$1,500 per ton, netted on your invoice.
When 10 Tons Is Not Enough
Warehouses, big-box retail and large open floors may need 15-25 tons, or several units. See 20-ton rooftop units. If you are replacing an old 10-ton unit at end of life, see commercial rooftop unit replacement. We install 10-ton units across Brampton, North York, Mississauga and the GTA, as part of our full range of commercial rooftop units in Toronto.
